Farmers through the education they acquire from the farm here can improve their

Considering the role of universities in
broader sense, We are persuaded that these institutions stand today as the most
promising hope for constructive solutions to the problems that beset the modern
world; problems which prevent the peaceful co-operation of nations, problems
which threaten the world and humanity with death and disaster.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
There
can be no peace among men and nations, so long as the strong
continues
to oppress the weak, so long as injustice is done to other people, just so long
will we have cause for war, and make a lasting peace an impossibility.
Hon. Marcus Garvey

Mankind, be it in past, present or future,
has always been judged not by color, or creed, but by the wealth of its
knowledge. It is only through learning and knowledge that one can give valuable

Slavery is a condition imposed upon
individuals or races not sufficiently
able
to protect or defend themselves, and so long as a race or people expose
themselves to the danger of being weak, no one can tell when they will be
reduced to slavery. When a man is a slave he has no liberty of action; no
freedom of will, he is bound and controlled by the will and act of others; as of
the individual, so of the race.

The educational program, on the whole,
should not emphasize only academic education but should also help the majority
of youth to earn their livelihood and be self-sufficient. To achieve that
objective, education at one level should not be narrowly conceived to be a
stepping-stone to another, but should encourage the youth to follow their
natural inclinations and aptitudes and thereby enable them to become useful
citizens.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
Propaganda has done more to defeat the good intentions of races and
nations
than even open warfare. Propaganda is a method or medium used by organized
peoples to convert others against their will. We of the Negro race are
suffering more than any other race in the world from propaganda-Propaganda to
destroy our hopes, our ambitions, and our confidence in self.

History tells us that education is not a new

To be learned in all that is worth while knowing;

Progress

The few who are fortunate enough to

His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

Many a man was educated outside the school room.
It is something you let
out, not completely take in. You are part
of at, for it is natural; dormant simply because you will not develop it, but
God creates every man with it knowingly or unknowingly to him who possesses
it-that's the difference. Develop yours and you become as great and a full
of knowledge as the other fellow without even entering the classroom.
Hon. Marcus Garvey

You should be well aware of the fact that it
is not mere academic achievement that is expected of you. Your knowledge
and training, unless put to proper and practical use, will be wasted like
hoarded money and you will be no better in this regard than the uneducated.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
People who rule (being selected by the masses
of their own) forget when
they come into power that they have an obligation
to those who places them in authority and through selfishness arrogate to
themselves all that is good within the nation to the exclusion of those who
suffer and to the exclusion of those who placed them in their positions of
trust. HENCE MONOPOLY-industrial, commercial and economic-which places
power in the hands of the select few, and through the selfishness of
administration by the few they cause the majority of the masses to exists
always in want. Through this want, a spirit of dissatisfaction springs
up among the people, and they, in their passion, seeking to correct the
evil, tear down governments.

As we have mentioned over and over
again, the test of what you students have obtained through your education
will be what you are able to accomplish in the future, Great
responsibilities await you. You must show the real worth of your education
by the way in which you shoulder these responsibilities. We are confident
that you will bring a blessing to your country, your families, to all those
who have planned and labored for you, and to yourselves.

utmost of yourselves to the service of your country. Let honesty and

So
many of us find excuses to get out of the Negro Race because we are led to

unworthy, because we are not contributing to the uplift and up building of
this noble race.
Hon. Marcus Garvey

The purpose of education is not merely
to commission individual for permanent employment but to make him
self-reliant and equip him with the faculty for creativity. One should
stand on one’s own feet shunning idleness and indefinite dependence on one’s
parent. This, of course, demands discipline and determination. The youth
We have educated have the obligation to serve the community from which they
come. Their participation in the nation-wide programs of the country is
eagerly awaited.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
Fear is a state of nervousness fit for
children and not men. When man fears
a creature like himself
he offends God, in whose image and likeness he is created. Man being
created equal tears not man but God. to fear is to lose control of one's
nerves, one's will-to flutter, like a dying fowl, losing consciousness, yet, alive.
Hon. Marcus Garvey

To do one’s job is one thing and to be
indifferent in general and be critical of the work of others another
matter. The former requires competence, determination and wisdom, while the
latter lacks these qualities and virtues.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
Criticism
is an opinion for good or evil, generally indulged in by the fellow
who
knows more than any one else,
yet the biggest fool. there is no
criticism that calls not forth yet another. The last critic is the
biggest fool of all, for the world starts and ends with him, He is the
source of all knowledge, yet knows nothing, for there is not a word one
finds to use that there is not another that hath the same meaning, then
wherefore do we criticize?
Hon. Marcus Garvey

When a man is engaged in useful

The
history of a movement, the movement of a nation, the history of a race

It is only by striving that one can
accomplish anything of value. Therefore, we should all rededicate ourselves

Ethiopia has been the traditional
torch-bearer of African freedom. What she must accomplish today in the
fields of modern education and national development must be infused into
this historical context. Our people must be aware of this. We therefore
urge all those who are educated to teach others less fortunate to strive to
seek the skills of literacy.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
The
white world has always tried to rob and discredit us of our history. It
is
not surprising, however,
that white men should resort to every means to
keep Negroes in ignorance of their history, it would be a great shock to
their pride to admit to the world today that 3,000 years ago black men
excelled in government and were the founders and teachers of art, science
and literature.
Hon. Marcus Garvey

In
order to advance in our respective undertakings and set ourselves on the
right path we have to learn and draw abundantly from the great spiritual
heritage which our fathers and forefathers have bequeathed to us. This can
give us strength and a sense of continuity which are essential for progress
and development. Learning and profound knowledge nurture noble character and
impart wisdom. The family unit and educational establishments have great
responsibilities in these endeavors for they are the basis of national
progress and prosperity.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
To
be prosperous in whatever we do is the sign of TRUE WEALTH. We
may be
wealthy in not only
having money, but in spirit and health. It is the
most helpful agency toward a self-satisfying life. One lives, in an
age like this, nearer perfection by being wealthy than being poor. To
the contended soul, wealth is the stepping stone to perfection; to the miser
it is the nearest avenue to hell. I would prefer to be honestly wealthy,
than miserably poor.

This

groups of peoples who are not ambitious enough to protect their own

The

The
world is not yet perfect. It is in chaos; yes, in confusion and out of
this
confusion will come many
upheavals that will shake its very foundation.
Fool not yourselves that the conferences that have been held, and will be
held in the future, are sufficient to settle the disgruntled state of the
world, the dissatisfied condition of humanity. They have not gone down to
the root of all evils that give cause to the great discontent, they will
never be able to establish a permanent peace and present to us a settled
world.
Hon. Marcus Garvey

There
is no protection from the demand that a man’s worth be assessed by his
achievements. Education and learning offer no escape from the obligation of
toil. Social positions and high birth provide no
guarantee of soft hands
and a life of ease and comfort. High origins are no passport to high
position. To those who contribute willingly, to the best of their
abilities, who, in sweat and toil, work for the good of the nation with
little thought of self, to them will much be given, even to the governing of
the land.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie
Hon. Bob Marley
All of us may not live to see the higher

The
needed educated individual is one who uses the ideas he obtained from his
lectures, books, and discussions to the best advantage of his own country
and his own people. It is he who disseminates new ideas in harmony with the

Ambition
is the desire to go forward and improve one's condition. It is a
burning flame that light's up

to be divinely ambitious is to offend God by rivaling him in His infinite

We
must look , into the depth of our souls. We must become something we have
never been and for which our education and experience and environment have
ill-prepared us. We must become bigger than we have been: more courageous,

overcoming petty prejudice, owing our ultimate allegiance not to nations but
to our fellow men within the human community.
His Imperial Majesty Emperor Haile Selassie

With all preparation the human race has made to welcome into the

the Christ who is to redeem

still fighting, still exploiting, still merciless in our onslaught one upon

glorious chorus sing out to the world "Peace, perfect peace?"

The
combination of academic knowledge with technical education will give great
satisfaction and will create a self-supporting individual. It is by the
combined use of the mind and the hand that crude material is changed into an
article of beauty and value. The time when manual labor was despised has
long passed and we find ourselves in an epoch when manual labor is a source
of pride and pleasure not only to the worker but to all. Laziness is the
sole breeder of sin, poverty, and discontent.

Development
is the accumulated result of intensive long-term efforts. It is not enough
that a nation desire development and economic maturity, any more than a
child, in wishing, becomes a man. Time is required, and experience, and
trial and error. The process and requirements of nature cannot be ignored
or evaded. The child must first crawl, then walk, before it can run. So,
also, must a nation progress through the successive stages of growth before
the stage is reached where rapid and ever-accelerating development is
possible.

If
we do not build the roads and bridges and schools, if we do not plough the

Has education been given that the educated may disdain physical toil and
perspiration? Have the healthy been protected from disease that they may

not those many nations which today are called “advanced” become so through
the toil and labor of their people?

But,
“Man cannot live by bread alone.” Man, after all is also composed of

money wisely and effectively. A habit once formed becomes an incurable
second nature. Therefore utilize your wealth for worthwhile things and
avoid employing it for harmful purposes and for monetary pleasures.
Use your savings where it will pay you
most. The hoarding of money does not yield dividends! If you wish your savings
to pay you higher dividends, join in with those of your fellow citizens. It is
through hard work, know-how, and patience that you will be able to increase your
capital.

country. True education goes hand in hand with one’s culture and heritage
and strengthens one’s belief in God Almighty

Let
us, from the greatest to the least, take pride in the performance of the
task and duties assigned to us, whether or not we believe them worthy of our
talents, whether we labor silent and alone, or in the crowd and illuminated
by the glaring light of public opinion. The reward for the job well
done is not in the recognition of others, nor in the public praise.
Neither is it to be measured solely by the monetary return earned by the
workman. It comes, rather, in the inner satisfaction that accompanies
the knowledge that the work accomplished represents the best of which we are
capable.

Education develops the intellect; and the
intellect distinguishes man from other creatures. It is education that
enables man to harness nature and utilize her resources for the well being
and improvement of his life. The key for the better and completeness
of modern living is education.

There is nothing as precious to man as a
sound mind in a sound body. And it is essential that the physical well
being of our people merit as much attention as its spiritual welfare.

Knowledge
is a treasure that must be grasped and which no one can confiscate; it is a
diamond without price which prevents the breaking of heaven's decree and
preserves from a path to destruction. Knowledge allows you to inherit
the Kingdom of God, which the mind of man cannot conceive; and is a
counselor in time of adversity. So may God grant you to attain a
wisdom and knowledge such as I have described.
